Sharp Since '85
Hancock Sharpening was started in 1985, partly out of frustration, as I couldn’t find a sharpening service that did quality work.
I was building musical instruments, doing furniture restoration work, and some cabinet making. Being a do-it-yourself type of person, I began looking at what it would take to do my own sharpening, and possibly doing it as a part time business.
I saw an ad in Popular Mechanics Magazine for a sharpening machine, promising $18.00 per hour in my spare time with the one machine that does it all. I quickly learned the machine did everything, except it didn’t do anything right. I then found a complete shop of manual Machines for sale, and started in my basement.
The business out-grew my basement when I added my first Automatic saw grinder. I moved to a warehouse in Minneapolis MN, and hired my first employee (who is still with us today).
In 1990, I was introduced through a mutual supplier to John Ophoven, who was operating a saw service his father started in the 1950’s. He had just moved into a warehouse space in Burnsville MN, and had extra room, and offered the space to me.
We continued to grow, add services, and upgrade equipment. In 1993, I added a Profile Grinder to offer cutter re-tipping, custom cutters, router bits, molder knives, and profiled inserts. I changed the name to Hancock Tool Co. to reflect the expanded capabilities and services.
We recently added a 5 axis Anca CNC grinder for our growing need for quality solid carbide tooling. We also invested in an Omax abrasive waterjet machine to cut moulder knives, and will will continue to build our capacity to provide the very best servicing available for your industrial cutting tools.
